Mexican Sugar Skulls

In case any one is planning to make some Calaveras (sugar skulls) for Los Dias De Los Muertos this year, i wanted to put a few pics out there and a few helpful tips.
First there is no need to buy Meringue powder. Use this recipe if your planning on using a mold.
3 cups sugar
1 egg white (large)
mix together thoroughly.
If the mixture is not coming out of the mold, just add more sugar, its probably too wet. You can dry your calavera in the oven at the lowest temp. for about 15 min. I use the back of a cereal box (shiny side against the skull.) Let sit for another 15 min. then hollow out the inside.

To make sugar skulls without a mold:
  • 2 small egg whites (or whites from 1 large egg)
  • 1 tsp. light corn syrup
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • mix, refridgerate for one hour then mold
